Board of Directors
John Kain . | . Chairman

John Kain is an Adelaide based corporate lawyer with expertise in corporate advisory, private equity and M&A. John practised as a partner at two Adelaide commercial law firms before establishing Kain Corporate + Commercial Lawyers in mid-2004. Kain C+C has since grown into one of Adelaide's leading boutique corporate law firms, with more than twenty-five team members specialising in corporate, commercial and M&A law.

John is currently Chairman of an Adelaide based investment company and has served on a number of boards, including as a director of public charitable trusts, Chairman of a Commonwealth government advisory panel and as director of a number of private companies. He is also a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

John graduated from Adelaide University and was admitted to legal practice in South Australia in 1990. He was subsequently admitted to practice in England and in New South Wales.

Mark Sowerby
Mark Sowerby . | . Managing Director

Mark Sowerby is the Founder and Managing Director of Blue Sky. He established the Blue Sky Group in 2006 as a private equity house investing expansion capital into Australian small to medium-sized businesses. Since that time Mark has expanded Blue Sky's suite of investment opportunities across a broad spectrum of asset classes.

Mark worked for a number of years with a US based commodity merchant, living in various parts of the US and working in a wide variety of locations including Mexico, Central America, China, South East Asia, Korea and Japan. He developed a strong understanding of export markets, business cultures, foreign trade, futures markets and derivatives. Mark completed his MBA and then joined an Adelaide based co-operative undergoing a substantial restructure. He re-engineered the business and delivered a new model for commercialisation partnerships between public and private entities, exporting to over sixty-five countries.

Mark has a strong academic foundation having completed a Master of Business Administration at the University of Queensland, a Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance and Investment at the Securities Institute of Australia in Sydney, and a Bachelor of Agricultural Science. Mark has completed the Private Equity and Venture Capital course at Harvard Business School, Boston, USA. He is also a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Mark Sowerby
Tim Wilson . | . Executive Director

Tim Wilson is the Managing Director of Blue Sky Private Equity and is responsible for leading the private equity team, sourcing and negotiating deals, advising portfolio companies on financing, entry and exit negotiation and building the Blue Sky network. He is also a director on a range of boards, both within and outside Blue Sky's portfolio companies.

Tim has worked in private equity for the last fourteen years through investment banking roles in London, Sydney and Brisbane. He began his career as a commercial lawyer in Brisbane with Minter Ellison before moving to London where he worked for nearly seven years in investment banking roles with Paribas and Credit Suisse First Boston. Tim then returned to Australia and worked in finance roles with Babcock & Brown, Westpac and Investec before joining Blue Sky.

Tim holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Queensland, a Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance and Investment, and a Master of Science in Finance from the London Business School. He has also undertaken the Private Equity and Venture Capital course at Harvard Business School, Boston, USA.

Tim Wilson
Alexander McNab . | . Executive Director

Alexander McNab is the Investment Director of Blue Sky Private Equity and is involved in all aspects of the private equity business, including deal sourcing, portfolio management and fundraising. Alexander is a director on a number of Blue Sky's portfolio company boards.

Prior to joining the Blue Sky Group, Alexander worked for eight years with Bain & Company, a leading global strategy consultancy. He worked in numerous locations including Sydney, Melbourne, Singapore and San Francisco and developed a broad skill set including the formulation of corporate and business unit strategies, leading performance improvement projects and influencing management teams to drive results.

Alexander brings a wealth of global experience and skills well suited to the Blue Sky Group. His experience stretches across a broad range of sectors including financial services, telecommunications, retail, consumer products, and technology.

Alexander holds a Bachelor of Economics (University Medal), and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Queensland. Alexander is also a graduate of the Royal Military College of Australia and is an INSEAD graduate with a Masters of Business Administration (Hons). He is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
